What remediation includes
- Tags and a logical reading order for every page, including attachments.
- Real headings, lists, and tables with header cells.
- Alternate text for images, and written descriptions for maps and charts where they are needed.
- Text recognition (OCR) and proofreading for scanned pages.
- A document title, language, bookmarks, and descriptions for links and form fields.
- An automated check and a manual review of each file, with a short report you can keep with your records.
What we need from you: the files (or the link where they will be posted), your posting deadline, and a contact who can answer questions about images or attachments.
How the pilot works
- Start with a free check. Send a link to a packet you recently posted. We run it through the PacketReady checker and send you the report with a proposed scope.
- Agree the details in writing: which meetings are included, typical page counts, and turnaround that fits your posting deadlines.
- Send each packet when it is ready, by email or a shared folder, whichever you already use.
- We return accessible PDFs and a report, and you post them as usual.
- After 60 days you can continue at $300 a month or stop.
Why fix the PDF itself
Some agenda and website platforms offer tools that publish an HTML version alongside each PDF, and those can help readers who use them. The PDF is still the file people download, print, forward by email and receive in records requests. When the PDF itself is accessible, it works everywhere it goes, including offline.
Who you would work with
PacketReady is a two-person team: Mahir Patel, an electrical-engineering student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and co-founder Sukh. During the pilot you work with us directly.
We are starting with Illinois public bodies. Illinois has 6,930 local governments, including 3,218 special districts, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2022 Census of Governments. Under the Justice Department's current schedule, special districts and entities with populations under 50,000 have until April 26, 2028, and larger entities until April 26, 2027 (Federal Register).
